i couldn't stand the emoness of this entry so i'm redoing it with something that makes me extra happy...
Penguins.

The Tasmanian Conservation Trust's Penguin Jumpers Project (http://www.tct.org.au/jumper.htm):

"Over 15,000 jumpers were collected, which will be stored in Oil Spill Response Kits around Tasmania.
In the case of a major oil spill, these jumpers will be used to help rehabilitate Little penguins (Eudyptula minor) that have been oil affected."

PENGUINS = CUTE
SWEATERS = CUTE
PENGUINS = TINY

By the substitution and transitive properties of adorableness,

PENGUINS + SWEATERS + TINY = CUTE X 3

[Current Music |DJ Spooky]

I’m in one of my phases again where I obsess over a single song and loop it (and loop it and loop it and…). This time it’s Blood Sugar by Pendulum and it’s blowing. my. mind. This is the most incredible sonic recreation of the end of the world that I’ve heard in ages. Actually that's not true. I don't even like it that much it just seems like I can't ever stop listening to it.

Ok, fuck it, I lied. It’s drum and bass. What you gonna do?

So. Today I drove to the Hotel Derek. Zoe drives, yes. My faja decided that we should all have a nice family brunch after our slightly weak attempt at a Thanksgiving. Initially we'd planned to dine at the Spindletop rotating restaurant on the 30th floor of the Hyatt downtown. Unfortunately, it's closed on Sundays so we went to the restaurant attached to Hotel Derek: Bistro Moderne, instead. It was quite enjoyable for the most part. Well, except for the Danish guy seated at the table next to us who consumed an entire bottle of red wine on his own and later ranted to his waiter about disgusting americans. I must say, he made several decent points.

Last night, Diana and I went to the Museum of Fine Arts for an event called The Beats of Basquiat. It was basically a bunch of local DJs opening for the famed DJ Spooky, free starbucks, and an entire room the size of a football field full of intensely hip people. The event was to celebrate the opening of Jean-Michael Basqiat (street graffiti artist turned painter)'s exhibition at the MFAH. Basqiat, former lover of Madonna and best friend of Andy Warhol, was huge (to say the least) in the 80's until he tragically died at the height of his career of an overdose. Anyway, we met up with Nick and Christina there a little later but we didn't see much of them. After an hour or maybe a little more we decided to leave the Museum. We stopped at Central Market and had some olives and then went to see Erin and Albert at Coldstone where we saw Reid too! Joy! Laura met up with us a little later at the Teahouse where we hung with Reid some.... of course, I left my phone in Reid's car so we drove alllll the way to Reid's house and met Walker! The cat! And what a cat he is.... a stud if I've ever seen one before.

Alas, the break has some to a sad end. Fortunately, Christmas break is only 3 short weeks away! Oh yes, I'm in Nutcracker on Ice in 2 weeks.... let me know if you want to attend!

(Happy Birthday, Michael McAfee. Love.)

An extract from the diary of Lieutenant Colonel Mervin Willett Gonin DSO who was among the first British soldiers to liberate Bergen-Belsen in 1945.

Camp

I can give no adequate description of the Horror Camp in which my men and myself were to spend the next month of our lives. It was just a barren wilderness, as bare as a chicken run. Corpses lay everywhere, some in huge piles, sometimes they lay singly or in pairs where they had fallen. It took a little time to get used to seeing men women and childen collapse as you walked by them and to restrain oneself from going to their assistance. One had to get used early to the idea that the individual just did not count. One knew that five hundred a day were dying and that five hundred a day were going on dying for weeks before anything we could do would have the slightest effect. It was, however, not easy to watch a child choking to death from diptheria when you knew a tracheotomy and nursing would save it, one saw women drowning in their own vomit because they were too weak to turn over, and men eating worms as they clutched a half loaf of bread purely because they had to eat worms to live and now could scarcely tell the difference. Piles of corpses, naked and obscene, with a woman too weak to stand proping herself against them as she cooked the food we had given her over an open fire; men and women crouching down just anywhere in the open relieving themselves of the dysentary which was scouring their bowels, a woman standing stark naked washing herself with some issue soap in water from a tank in which the remains of a child floated. It was shortly after the British Red Cross arrived, though it may have no connection, that a very large quantity of lipstick arrived. This was not at all what we men wanted, we were screaming for hundreds and thousands of other things and I don't know who asked for lipstick. I wish so much that I could discover who did it, it was the action of genius, sheer unadulterated brilliance. I believe nothing did more for these internees than the lipstick. Women lay in bed with no sheets and no nightie but with scarlet red lips, you saw them wandering about with nothing but a blanket over their shoulders, but with scarlet red lips. I saw a woman dead on the post mortem table and clutched in her hand was a piece of lipstick. At last someone had done something to make them individuals again, they were someone, no longer merely the number tatooed on the arm. At last they could take an interest in their appearance. That lipstick started to give them back their humanity

[Current Music |Lauryn Hill- I can't take my eyes off of you]

I’m not going to apologize for not blogging, because I’ve decided to stop feeling guilty about it. Lately it’s felt like a chore to write anything, and I don’t want my site to be something I feel obligated to work on. I think it’s better for my posts to be less frequent if I enjoy them more that way.

Now that my non-apology is out of the way, here are some things I’ve been up to recently:

-Reading Harry Potter: thoroughly enjoyed, I must say. The Perks of Being a Wallflower (again), and random Irish poetry books I've found around the house.

-Doing whatever I can to avoid summer homework.

-MISSING THE TEAHOUSE. oh so very much. I've been plenty since school let out but it's just not the same without everyone there.

-Wandering aimlesly around Newark and Wilmington, Delaware... not exactly thrilling as the majority of my "vacation" was spent skating but all in all a decent trip. I would have to say the highlight was the 150 plus lacrosse players staying in my hotel.

-Listening to alot of Aqueduct, Pinback, the Band, the Streets, Iron and Wine, the Go! Team, LCD Soundsystem, and Frank Sinatra

-Watching anime, Hell's Kitchen, the first season of The OC (please refrain from commenting on that), the Andy Milonakis Show, 10 Years Younger, Queer Eye, and reruns from the first season of Lost.

-Trying to get over a sinus infection-ish thing. Ugh.

-Not biking as much as I wanted to because of the said sinus infection-ish thing. Double ugh.

-Being way too entertained by the phrase “chunky bacon.” But really, it’s pretty fun. Try it!

and finally:

-Being way too pissed of at the downfall of my appearance..... ACNE.

[Current Music |I know you are but what am I - Mogwai]

It’s time for another confession. I, um, kinda like the new Kelly Osbourne single. And by kinda, I mean… really. I really like it. A lot. Even if I tried to dislike it, I don’t think I could. See, the problem is that it’s good. Kelly isn’t trying/failing miserably to do the rock thing anymore. "One Word" is all synthed up and sort of dancy and just oozes cool. And the chorus? Catchy as hell. *Phew* I’m glad to have that off my chest. Now, in an attempt to reclaim a slight bit of dignity, I’ll also recommend Hide and Seek by Imogen Heap. The best way I can describe the song is that it’s being sung by a chorus of tiny melodic robots. If it weren’t for the heavy processing on Imogen’s voice, the song would be pretty much acappella. It’s a stunningly beautiful tune. Tune in next time when I figure out some way to lose yet more coolness. Maybe I’ll decide to like country music. (DON'T COMMENT!!!)

when there's nothing left to burn, you have to set yourself on fire.

well well and another well. it's a gloomy day. i know that i've claimed to be leaving livejournal twice now. but it's summer and.... oh what the hell i don't have an excuse. i just wanted to come back, ok? Neat. hmmm... so i guess summer has been alright so far. i went to a party at lauren george's house the friday school got out. it was... rowdy. this week my mom was in moscow so i hung out at christina's alot. we just did various things... went to soundwaves hung out at her house... we went tagging with jb and this kid al at reagan and explored this construction site which was amusing. i enjoyed it, it was... chill. i guess that's the cool thing to say these days.

then i got grounded on.... thursday i think it was. it was unjust. i still do not agree with it. so today i worked and then went to dog training with my godmother. it was actually reasonably interesting. after that i went to this baby shower at the funkyard? it was probably the most insane baby shower i've ever been to in my life. of course, i've only been to maybe 2 or 3.... but i'm tellin' ya... this was the baby shower of baby showers. it went from 4 to 8... which is fairly long for a baby shower, right? there were men dressed as apes running around everywhere. Cool. the whole thing was just really really bizarre. and this ridiculously eccentric woman was holding it. it was quite an experience. i don't think i've ever seen so many wasted adults at 5 in the afternoon. of course, i proceeded to sneek a shot or two myself... heh heh. this went unnoticed. and so then my mom returned from crazy russia and we went to dinner at berryhill which was ok i guess. as everyone knows, i am an asian food junkie so i would have preferred mai's or van loc... but hey, c'est la vie. i'm gonna go mope around and attempt to make my parents feel guilty for not allowing me to go to ska fest... because according to my dad, sulking is what i am best at. sulking and manipulating everyone and everything to get what i want. whaaaaatev.

g'night everyone.

Plot Summary: Academy Award-winning director Hayao Miyazaki ("Spirited Away") takes moviegoers on an amazing new animated adventure that celebrates the power of love to transform and the resiliency of the human spirit in the face of adversity. Brimming with a blend of imagination, humor, action, and romance, "Howl's Moving Castle" recently played to great acclaim at the 2004 Venice Film Festival, and has become one of the biggest blockbusters of all time in Japan. The film has already earned more than $200 million at the international box office.

A distinguished cast of actors, under the direction of Pixar's Pete Docter ("Monsters, Inc.") and Disney's Rick Dempsey, lend their vocal talents to this English-language version of the film. Sophie (voiced by Emily Mortimer), an average teenage girl working in a hat shop, finds her life thrown into turmoil when she is literally swept off her feet by a handsome-but-mysterious wizard named Howl (voiced by Christian Bale), and is subsequently turned into a 90-year old woman (voiced by screen legend and two-time Oscar nominee Jean Simmons) by the vain and conniving Wicked Witch of the Waste (voiced by screen legend and Oscar nominee Lauren Bacall). Embarking on an incredible odyssey to lift the curse, she finds refuge in Howl's magical moving castle where she becomes acquainted with Markl, Howl's apprentice, and a hot-headed fire demon named Calcifer (voiced by Billy Crystal). Sophie's love and support comes to have a major impact on Howl, who flies in the face of orders from the palace to become a pawn of war and instead risks his life to help bring peace to the kingdom. Extraordinary characters, inventive imagery, and stunning artistry make this latest masterpiece from the visionary Miyazaki an unforgettable film going experience.

alright so i'm back. heh i just couldn't resist the urge. i'll update some... in and out whenever i can... but pleeeaasseee only G-rated language incase the parents decide to spot check  my livejournal. alright so lets seeee... today is may 1st which makes my birthday in 19 days. i'm deffinitely looking forward to that. there hasn't been much progress made on the plans for me and hawnuh p's party but we shall work it out. so the highlight of my weekend was getting my cell phone on saturday. the number is 713 594 8132. today i woke up and jogged some then i went out for dimsum which was amazing. i think we are going to make it a monthly tradition... then i came home and biked around some and went to donovan park to study a bit for my mother german vocabulary test. geeeze. so much german. i wanted to go see a movie at the angelika later but i doubt that'll happen, we'll see.

Cult independent film writer and director Todd Solondz (Welcome to the Dollhouse, Storytelling) brings us Palindromes, a fable of innocence. 13-year-old Aviva Victor wants to be a Mom. She does all she can to make this happen, but in the end her plan is thwarted by her sensible parents. So she runs away, still determined to get pregnant one way or another, but instead finds herself lost in another world, one pregnant itself with all sorts of strange possibility. Like so many trips, this one is round-trip, and it's hard to say in the end if she can ever be quite the same again. Featuring jaw-dropping performances from Ellen Barkin, Debra Monk, Stephen Adly-Guirgus, and Jennifer Jason Leigh, Palindromes may be Solondz' most political and philosophical film yet.

that movie looks really good. it's coming out soon at the angelika.

jeeeez i'm tired. i've had a daaaay. i woke up around 10 which is a new record for me, i usually can't sleep past 8. theeen i was supposed to go skating but i was too tired... and i didn't go to unitarian church either. theeeeeen we had this whole plan to go to the astros game. but my dads warehouse where he keeps his tools was broken into so he had to deal with the pooolice so we ended up not going to that. when he came home, he was in an unusually good mood and wanted to go out for brunch so we went to some new italian restaurant. it was ooooooooooook. theeeen i came home and did some homework. theeen i made my way over to slicks to meet up with a whoooole bunch of people... some of whom i did not know. i didn't actually play pool but i just hung around and watched some... then we went over to princes and i got a very delicious oreo malt. theeeeeen went back to slicks for a bit and played some erotic picture matching game that was quite interesting. then someone came up with the idea to go see sin city across the street at edwards. at first it seemed like everyone was gonna go but then it ended up only being me, kris, lauren, nick, rachel, and sophie. but then sophie left. sin city was gooood! we missed the beginning but we caught up with the story line pretty easily. it surpassed my expectations. theeen we went over to fudruckers to find maddy there along with the other people. theeeeeeeen my mom came to pick me up and that was the end of that. bleeeecccchhh i feel half dead. aww mayne, tomorrow is the end of the weekend. ohhh well, it's been nice. and i met alleybeart's girlfriend too! leila! or as i now call her... la-lei.
